What the press say: Metal Hammer – “A grooving and soulful approach to hard rock that’s aggressive and odd”. Big Chees – “Totally bat shit crazy and I love it” […]

Neil Cox started playing drums at 14 and took up lessons from Bob Armstrong, whose own drumming and tuition career make him one of the best. Inspired by his favourites such as Weather Report, Parliament, The Police, Led Zepplin and Jamiroquai, Neil took up the drums after watching Stuart Copeland in The Police and drummer Buddy Rich, who toured with his orchestra in the 70s and 80s. Sam Smith caught in between the “worst hate sandwich in pop.’
Music execs were apparently worried Sam Smith would be caught in between the “worst hate sandwich in pop.’ The British singer stormed the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, walking away with four awards and cementing his status as one of the world’s biggest music stars. Many of his A-list friends were on hand on show their support, including alleged feuding pop stars Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. At an after show party it was Katy who was on hand to help Sam Smith celebrate his mammoth evening, with Taylor said to be noticeably absent. ‘Katy hugged and toasted Sam’s success with pals. They stayed together for about 45 minutes. Katy seemed delighted with his wins and kept hugging him,” a source divulged to New York Daily News’ Confidenti@l. ‘Taylor was expected at the bash but ducked away. Execs worried that Sam could get caught in the worst hate sandwich in pop.’ Katy’s on-off boyfriend John Mayer recently brought Taylor, who he also previously dated, up in an interview, saying the blonde star would be avoiding him at the Grammys. This apparently added even more fuel to the spat, with Taylor reportedly feeling bullied. However Sam isn’t letting his friends’ feud […]
Mark Ronson New Album news
Mark Ronson thinks his new album is “a grown-man record”. The British DJ and music producer released his fourth studio album Uptown Special last month. The record has been well received on both sides of the Atlantic, which is a relief to the 39-year-old as he was keen to take a different approach to his previous work. “Uptown Special is like a grown-man record. It’s maybe the first time where I decided to divorce the DJ element from my name and just make a record I’d want to listen to, and worry later about how people might categorise it,” he explained to British newspaper Metro. It’s been five years since Mark’s last album, Record Collection, and he admits he was acutely aware of how much music can change in a short space of time. It left him wondering if there would even be any demand for his music any more, despite his past successes. “It had been a while since my last record and people’s tastes change even quicker now, so I was looking around and thinking, what kind of record am I supposed to make? Do people even care if I make a record?” he said. “It took me […]

Music Mirror UK gives “Rise” by Madam Voodoo a whirl
Madam Voodoo consists of Cass, 7even and Dr G, whose influences stem from electronica from 1990s including psychedelic trance (psytrance), grunge and punk. One of lead vocalist Cass’s earliest memories is using her grandparent’s dining table as a stage for her rendition of ‘Tits and Ass” from the musical A Chorus Line. Emerging In the early 2000’s Cass became a pioneer of the Melbourne shuffle after her all-consuming love of dance and trance music drew her into the emerging underground rave scene. Songwriter 7Even draws inspiration from the depths of his social conscience to create lyrics and melodies that bring Madam Voodoo’s songs vividly to life. Dr G previously featured in the down-tempo trip hop duo Aventine and, in the late 90s, appeared in a Coke ad shot from a helicopter above the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Electronic Madam Voodoo’s sound, a thumping electronic music with a strong pop sensibility, is composed, recorded and mixed in their own studio. The new single “Rise” has already been play-listed on Australia’s Triple J, Matchbox Radio 24, Pop Shop FM, London FM, Radio ZA Africa and Discover80s.fm. The song was described by Noise Porn Magazine at the Miami Winter Music Conference as an “exciting […]

Anyone who fears that London’s bold musical heartbeat is faltering could be reassured by the recent arrival of The Boy From the Crowd on the scene. Inclinations The London-based rock duo comprises Vinny Piana and Vegas Ivy who formed The Boy From The Crowd when their musical inclinations collided in 2013. The pair shared musical influences from Robert Johnson and Howlin’ Wolf, Captain Beefheart and Jon Spencer. Vinny, born in the south of France, toured Europe and the UK with various bands and composed soundtracks for films, including a Sundance favourite LoveSexy. Then Vegas added his pounding voodoo drums to Vinny’s long-cherished new musical venture. Imperfections Summing up his take on their approach, Vinny says: “One of the things that makes rock ’n’ roll great is its little imperfections and riding on the edge of disaster, knowing full well that any second it could all just fall apart.” Their EP ‘Where the Bees Come to Die’, produced by Vinny and recorded in Maako studios, London, contains their first single Revelator, which is already receiving enthusiasm from the music press. Future FM Magazine wrote: “The so-called “two-man team that’s putting the boot back into blues” seem to have recorded a winner of […]

Very British Folk Pop Musician gives Prince some Competition with his band’s musical arrangements
Until 2008, Boz Hayward was a punk musician who once rehearsed in rooms next door to the Happy Mondays and Oasis in the basement of Manchester’s famous Boardwalk nightclub, back in its heyday. When his bassist and close friend died, Boz turned to folk and acoustic pop to focus on his songwriting. The Bozchestra is the affectionate name for Boz’s band who accompany him on an array of instruments combining guitar, mariachi bass, violins, trumpets, keyboards, glockenspiel, the Russian domra, mandolin, dulcimer and slide guitar with percussion and drums. Frequent line-up The most frequent Bozchestra line-up are Phil Robinson on ‘guitarron’ bass, Mark Greer on slide guitar, Rick Burrows on brass, Dan Bridgwood-Hill on strings and keys and Rob Haynes on percussion and drums. Born in Hereford, Boz’s family moved around with his father’s RAF work. Boz went to Manchester Poly and based his musical operations from Manchester’s thriving Boardwalk basement rehearsal studios. Not one to refuse a “crooner” set with a piano, Boz also composes instrumentals and film music, which lead to his Shortscores album in 2013. Boz composes for himself with the Bozchestra, although his creative output is constant and he has song material to spare for other performers. […]

After playing guitar in bands as a student, Sevenski’s music was unleashed by working with producers in digital studios and now he launches a single with 5 club mixes from his own studio. Sevenski is a dance music producer of Russian descent, who was raised in Hampshire, with his own studio in Essex which gives him quick access to London’s mastering studios and clubs. SOUNDTRACKS With a passion for a strong melody, Sevenski’s influences range from film soundtracks to various dance genres, producers like Paul Van Dyke and Ferry Corsten‘s remix of Barbers Adagio For Strings. Comparing the process of creating dance music to playing his material on stage with a band, Sevenski says: “I discovered that apart from some essential technical detail it’s down to personal self-expression….a bit like an artist with a colour palette”. OBSESSION As a student, Sevenski played in live bands before he developed an obsession with Virus synths and computer digital audio workstations (DAW) and proceeded to set up his own production studio. Marathon Running Ex-Mod Grandfather Realises Musical Dream after Brain Tumour
James Pearce, 63, wastes no more time to launch his own career as a singer-songwriter after successful surgery to remove a brain tumour. James Pearce was once an apprentice upholsterer before becoming a Mod, riding a Lambretta Zoo SXSpecial and absorbing the music of the 60s and 70s, especially Johnny Duncan and The Blue Grass Boys. Singer Although a self-declared failed guitarist, James took to singing and ran a karaoke night with his brother John, whom James claims is the better singer. This resulted in James recording an album of covers of his favourite songs such as Johnny Duncan’s ‘Last Train to San Fernando’. In 2009 James penned his first song: “She Came Walking”. Happily married with two children, James is now a grandfather, which seems to be all the rage amongst Glastonbury’s headline performers. Dramatically James’ life changed dramatically when he was diagnosed with a large brain tumour in the base of his skull, but this was successfully removed in 2011 by his hero and surgeon Richard Kerr. While in hospital, James first heard about Headway Oxfordshire, which supports change to people’s lives after a brain injury. As a passionate marathon runner, Headway Oxfordshire inspired James to regain […]
Glastonbury 2014 – independent weekend review
2014 festival shows how diverse cultural roots are inspiring pop mainstream With 200,000 people, or a veritable city, airdropped into a huge farm in Somerset, promising performers of all persuasions were going to attract a crowd. Acknowledged As acknowledged by Sophie Ellis Bextor, pop and disco have once again found their places at Glastonbury, allowing audiences and acts to bond over some classics to sing along and dance to. Eager faces of all ages could be seen lip-synching to every word along with Ellie Goulding, Bryan Ferry, Caro Emerald and Dolly Parton. It was wonderful to see the return of lighter mainstream genres, popular for good reason that they are great to let your hair down to, singing and dancing along, rekindling happy memories. Fans can be themselves Compared to some harder dance genres that have dominated the charts, pop and disco say “I like this whatever you think” and are free of the occasional self-consciousness of rap or hip-hop while leaving fans to be themselves without prescription dress, moves and lingo. Evident this year was the rise of the DJ to rock star stats, as Sasha, DJ Pierre, David Morales, Shy FX, Above and Beyond and many more entertained […]

Great new song – Kimbra
Here’s a new one you might like: Love In High Places by Kimbra, a new female artist from NZ. It’s got a slight Tove Lo pace and vocals, I think. But this is pacier with a catchy, foot tapping lyric and Kimbra has an interesting voice. Here’s the story of this and Kimbra’s other song on Direct Lyrics
Annick delivers steamy hit for Europe’s clubs
“Give it to me” is the turbo-charged, wickedly erotic and risqué new single from Annick, stage persona of Tammy Pelchat from Ontario, Canada. Annick explodes onto the scene with her turbo-charged, wickedly erotic, debut single “Give It To Me”. Reminiscent of such old skool, funky, sleezehouse gems as Jamie Principle “Baby Wants To Ride”, Lil Louis “French Kiss”, and Laidback “White Horse” or the tongue-in cheek playfulness of the dance-pop, Eurodance and house of 20 Fingers with 94’s controversial “Short Dick Man.” “Give It To Me” drives it all home, as it adds some nu-flavour to the already spiced up mix of retro electro delight and oozes with raw sexual passion to become more erotic and controversial than Berlin’s “Sex (I’m A)” or Soft Cell’s “Sex Dwarf”. HOT AND SEXY Annick says, “if Give It To Me is a little too hot and sexy for your kitchen, there is even a few mixes that will politely douse the fires. It’s still deliciously erotic and seductive pop dance candy.” Accompanying Annick singles are scorching hot mixes from some of the biggest names in clubland. She’s working with three-time Grammy Award winners The Klubjumpers (known for their awesome mixes of Madonna, Mariah Carey […]

The Framed release EP after notable gigs and festival
The Framed are a 4-piece band from Aberdeen consisting of Glynn McGregor (drums), Gareth Burr (guitars), Steve Ross (rhythm guitar) and Jamie Reid (vocals and bass). The group formed due to a distinct love of all things musical driven by a desire to get out of working 9 to 5. Their music is upbeat rock with some punk simplicity, indie sensibilities and some sometimes naive and thoughtful lyrical content thrown in for a more Vindaloo type kick. The band have recently recorded their debut EP at Monnow Valley Studios with producer Paul Tipler and mastered it at Metropolis Studios with John Davis. With the release of the EP ” I Don’t Know “this month, their first festival performance already behind them and gigs plays over last few months, the future should be exciting for this band. “I Don’t Know” is the latest single from The Framed and will be released on 30 June 2014.

Led Zeppelin Aiming at Numbers 8, 10 and 11 in the U.S.; Mariah Carey’s Album Plummets An Astounding 75%
Whole story on VVN Music Hits Daily Double, the chart prognostication site, has projected that Led Zeppelin will take positions 8, 10 and 11 on this week’s sales chart. Like in most countries, the band’s debut album seems to be the winner by a small margin with projected sales of 31,500 which should put them at number 8. Unlike other places, Led Zeppelin II appears to have out sold Led Zeppelin III by a margin of 29,400 to 28,800. III had fairly consistently been coming in second in the rest of the world. If the numbers hold, it should put II and III at numbers 10 and 11. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8kWx088vSw Those positions seem fairly safe as the album at 12, Michael Jackson’s Xscape, is only projected at 25,300. Mariah Carey‘s new album, Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse takes a major fall from 3 to the high 20’s with projected sales down a whopping 75%. Normal second week sales see decreases of 50% to 55%. The sales support our contention that Carey’s latest will almost certainly not even reach gold status (500,000 sales) as it will struggle to hit 100,000 by week three. Another deluxe package reissue, Soundgarden‘s Superunknown, looks to sell around 10,500 to place […]

Mancunian songwriter JazFreddy Royal has produced a new club anthem “Samba! Samba!” to raise money for international children’s charity UNICEF themed on the 2014 World Cup being held in Rio. The “Foe We All Miss You” singer managed to persuade Benedict Farr and Steve Oliver, managers at the National Football Museum and the manager of That’s Entertainment to support the fundraising by selling his song through their outlets.
