Mark and Luisa recently met on stage in a local production of Hot Mikado, which is a gospel and blues version of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic. Mark wanted to form a band with a mixture of modern pop sensibilities, 80s pizazz and a gospel feel, which became possible when he met Luisa and Cold Sugar was born. During the chorus rehearsals for Hot Mikado, Mark was struck by the gospel and blues backing vocals sung in classical alto and soprano parts and realised that this was the sound he was missing for his music. The debut single from Cold Sugar is called One More Thing and the band describes it as “a bittersweet song. On first listen it sounds like a pop song with a slightly ‘emosh’ (emotional or serious) build up to an upbeat chorus. The song is in fact about dumping someone because you realise it’s all a disaster. The story of the song really takes place in the pre-choruses, e.g. ‘Look at […]

Noel Gallagher has taken another swipe at Harry Styles say Music Mirror UK !

Noel Gallagher has taken another swipe at Harry Styles, slamming the star for having “nothing to say for himself”.The former Oasis rocker isn’t afraid to voice his opinions and in 2013 he slammed Harry’s band One Direction for making “f**king dreadful” music. Now he’s laid into the curly-haired lothario once more, claiming the 21-year-old doesn’t deserve his stardom.“I’ll tell you what’s wrong. Fame’s wasted on these c**ts today,” Noel grumbled to Britain’s Esquire magazine. “Harry Styles has got nothing to say for himself – nothing. ‘You alright, mate?’ ‘Uhhh.’ That’s it. The gig will never die because you can’t download it. You can’t download spirit.”Noel also took aim at the group’s former member Zayn Malik, previously commenting on his departure from the boy band in March (15) and calling him a “f**king idiot”. The tattooed singer left the band to focus on being a “normal 22-year-old”, but has already been in the studio working on solo music.“And, so, for the likes of me who persevered from an early age to play the f**king guitar and write songs and practise and practise and practise, I’ll be fine,” Noel added. “God help f**king Zayn Malik.” The musician’s interview wasn’t all negative though, […]

XFM re-launches as Radio X Men ?

After growing whispers about Chris Moyles‘s return to radio, the secret is out. The DJ will front the reinvention of XFM into Radio X – “the first truly male-focused, fully national music and entertainment brand for 25-44 year olds”.Moyles will be joined by a core line-up of Vernon Kay, Johnny Vaughan and Ricky Wilson. But does Radio X spell good or bad news for radio? Ahead of its launch on September 21, two writers argue for and against XFM’s new incarnation. of the ’90s in one fell swoop – Lisa WrightIt’s an oft-noted fact that scenes happen in 20-year cycles, but logic dictates that some element of filtering should occur between them. The influence of Blur, The Stone Roses and many others from the ’90s premier league can be seen resonating in the likes of Peace, Superfood and Childhood currently, but we’ve tactfully sidelined Menswe@r and Salad.Chokers and plaid are de rigeur once again, but the re-emergence of the shell suit is hopefully a thing we’ll never have to suffer. Why then, is Radio X – formerly known as actually-pretty-decent radio station Xfm – deciding to resurrect everything that’s boorish and regressive about ’90s media culture? Radio X is aiming […]

Robert O’ Connor looks at TAYLOR SWIFT, STREAMING AND SINGERS ON MINIMUM WAGE

The lives of those in the entertainment industry have become significantly more transparent in the past ten years, none more than pop stars, who regularly document their every move on Twitter and even show us what they’ve had for breakfast via Instagram. Their relationships with others, which previously played out in gossip magazines and tabloids, have become more visible – and in real time. Sure, in the ‘90s we had bust-ups between boybands and bitchy remarks between Britney and Christina, but never before have we been able to see behind the showbiz curtain so much as we can today – as evidenced by Zayn Malik’s outburst towards Calvin Harris and Taylor Swift, this week. In the latest of the 22-year-old’s Twitter attacks, the former 1D singer posted a meme that, pretty much, spelled out his thoughts about Taylor Swift’s assumed greed, for refusing to allow her music to be made available on Spotify. The music streaming app charges users just $9.99 per month and in return gives – or rather lends them – a catalogue of music they can stream on their phones, tablets and laptops. It has revolutionised the music industry and, as demonstrated by Ms Swift, has made […]

Sam Smith caught in between the “worst hate sandwich in pop.’

Music execs were apparently worried Sam Smith would be caught in between the “worst hate sandwich in pop.’ The British singer stormed the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, walking away with four awards and cementing his status as one of the world’s biggest music stars. Many of his A-list friends were on hand on show their support, including alleged feuding pop stars Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. At an after show party it was Katy who was on hand to help Sam Smith celebrate his mammoth evening, with Taylor said to be noticeably absent. ‘Katy hugged and toasted Sam’s success with pals. They stayed together for about 45 minutes. Katy seemed delighted with his wins and kept hugging him,” a source divulged to New York Daily News’ Confidenti@l. ‘Taylor was expected at the bash but ducked away. Execs worried that Sam could get caught in the worst hate sandwich in pop.’ Katy’s on-off boyfriend John Mayer recently brought Taylor, who he also previously dated, up in an interview, saying the blonde star would be avoiding him at the Grammys. This apparently added even more fuel to the spat, with Taylor reportedly feeling bullied. However Sam isn’t letting his friends’ feud […]

Mark Ronson New Album news

Mark Ronson thinks his new album is “a grown-man record”. The British DJ and music producer released his fourth studio album Uptown Special last month. The record has been well received on both sides of the Atlantic, which is a relief to the 39-year-old as he was keen to take a different approach to his previous work. “Uptown Special is like a grown-man record. It’s maybe the first time where I decided to divorce the DJ element from my name and just make a record I’d want to listen to, and worry later about how people might categorise it,” he explained to British newspaper Metro. It’s been five years since Mark’s last album, Record Collection, and he admits he was acutely aware of how much music can change in a short space of time. It left him wondering if there would even be any demand for his music any more, despite his past successes. “It had been a while since my last record and people’s tastes change even quicker now, so I was looking around and thinking, what kind of record am I supposed to make? Do people even care if I make a record?” he said. “It took me […]
