If Nielsen Music’s midyear report is indicative of a bigger trend, the news that embattled R&B singer R. Kelly has been arrested again could very well help his streaming numbers. At least that’s what happened during the first part of 2019. Despite the sexual abuse allegations highlighted in the Lifetime documentary series “Surviving R. Kelly,” streams of Kelly’s songs increased 13% year-to-year from 2018. The data reinforce the axiom that there’s no such thing as bad PR. If Kelly is trending on social media, which he has been for the past day, listeners seem unconcerned about whether it’s for good or bad reasons. On Thursday, the artist was arrested in Chicago after being indicted on 13 federal counts, including charges of child pornography, kidnapping and obstruction of justice. Day-to-day numbers for Kelly’s streams after the Jan. 3-5 Lifetime airing of “Surviving R. Kelly” are telling. Compared with the day prior to the premiere, streams of Kelly’s music rose 116 percent on Jan. 5, according to Billboard. TIM Brasil offers music streaming with business plans
TIM Brasil has extended the TIM Music by Deezer streaming service to customers of its corporate plans. New users who activate the TIM Black Empresas 20 GB and 50 GB plans will have the service included in the promotional offer, with no data used for the music service deducted from the franchise. Other users can contract the service for BRL 15.39 per month. The TIM Black Empresas plans include data for messaging apps (WhatsApp and Messenger), transport apps (Waze and Easy Taxi) and social networks (Instagram, Facebook and Twitter) and calls are unlimited throughout Brazil. The 20 GB plan costs BRL 129.99/month per access, while the 50 GB plan costs BRL 199.99.
Music streaming income leads to profit surge at Warner Music’s Irish arm
The growth in income from music streaming contributed to pre-tax profits almost doubling to €546,865 at the Irish arm of music giant Warner Music last year. Warner Music counts all-conquering Ed Sheeran in its roster of stars and new accounts for Warner Music Ireland Ltd show the company enjoyed the 88 per cent increase in pre-tax profits after revenues increased by 7 per cent from €10.86 million to €11.59 million in the 12 months to the end of September last. According to the directors’ report, revenues increased during the year largely due to the growth of music streaming. Sounding an upbeat note, the directors said they believed the company will continue to grow turnover. Other artists signed to the label include Dua Lipa, Rita Ora, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Kylie, Jess Glynne and Coldplay. On the firm’s future developments, the directors say the company “is embracing the spectrum of opportunities presented by digital technology to deepen the connection between fans and artists”. They state that “creating and developing new business models to accelerate its business transformation remains a top strategic imperative”. Margarita Shamrakov is a singer/songwriter/producer who started to play music in Ukraine. At 17 she immigrated to the US, because of hardship only to be all on her own in the US. Margarita feels very lonely even now after many years in the U.S. 2001 Margarita Shamrakov won the John Lennon songwriting contest and was about to get a record deal. However everything fell through. And she was all alone again working different jobs to make ends meet. In 2006 she met Mike Anzel– producer and engineer who collaborated with Margarita on the album ‘Tragedy’ Again, labels took interest , however nothing worked out again. Currently, Margarita is living in NYC and raising her daughter Kiki and a dog Marshall. She is writing, recording and producing all her music by herself. Karmic Blues, the debut album by Ajay Srivastav, hits the No.1 spot on the Amazon Blues Album charts the weekend of its release. British singer songwriter Ajay Srivastav’s first album as a solo artist is a blend of Delta Blues and Indian Folk. The album ‘Karmic Blues’ was forged during a trip to Ajay’s ancestral home in Varanasi ‘the holy city of India’ and speaks about his identity in a challenging world. Ajay’s laid-back style flows from the banks of the Delta Blues which influenced him as a child, to the ghats of the Ganges, where he learnt raags from the gurus.
